Workshops Details (What does the class look like?)

Kayak Workshops consist of four to six participants. A typical workshop runs about eight days, starting on a Saturday morning and running to the end of the following Saturday.

It is common for workshop participants to show up two days early to assist me and to learn how the initial preparatory work is done for the kayak’s major wooden structural members (such as how to choose the wood, how to economically get kayak parts out of a single piece of larger lumber, and how to measure and mortice the gunwales). If you would to do this, you can learn a great deal in the process if you show up early.

Classes run from 9am to 6pm each day, including preparatory days, though of course some days we finish earlier and some days we run a little longer. The last day we are often far enough ahead to take the completed kayaks out to paddle them on local water.

Also, feel free to take a look at photos of previous workshops. Please note that the locations and shops are quite varied as we run workshops all over the United States.

We have workshop space about 35 minutes east of Portland, Oregon. We are working on guest accomodation on our site, which is a beautiful location in a National Scenic Area, and rates less expensive than nearby hotels. Camping may also be available, please inquire.
